Wool is one of the most common rug materials we clean — and one of the most misunderstood when it comes to pricing. We regularly hear some version of: “I don’t understand why my wool rug quote is higher than I expected.” The answer almost always comes down to one distinction: is your rug machine-made, or hand-knotted?
Machine-Made Wool
A lot of wool rugs — including popular, widely-sold brands like Safavieh — are machine-made. They’re genuinely well-made rugs, and there’s nothing wrong with owning one. But “machine-made” means exactly what it sounds like: manufactured on a loom at scale, not tied by hand. That makes them faster and less expensive to produce — and also somewhat more straightforward to clean safely.
Hand-Knotted Wool
A genuine hand-knotted wool rug is a different thing entirely. Each one represents real hours of manual work, often with more complex dye work and construction. Hand-knotted rugs typically require more careful, hands-on cleaning to protect that construction — which is real extra time and skill, not an arbitrary upcharge.

Because of this real difference in the work involved, we price wool in two tiers:
- Machine-Made Wool — $3/sqft
- Hand-Knotted Wool — $6/sqft
Not Sure Which One You Have?
Here are a few quick things to check:
- The back of the rug — hand-knotted rugs typically show visible knots and irregular patterning on the reverse side; machine-made rugs usually have a more uniform, mesh-like backing
- The fringe — on hand-knotted rugs, the fringe is usually an extension of the rug’s actual foundation threads; on machine-made rugs, fringe is often sewn on separately
- The price you originally paid — genuine hand-knotted rugs are typically a meaningful investment; if your rug was inexpensive, it’s very likely machine-made
